Michael King is an internationally recognized Pilates educator with over 47 years of experience in movement education. He is widely regarded as one of the individuals who played a key role in the development of structured Pilates educational programs and teaching standards for instructors worldwide.
He began his professional journey as a dancer at the London School of Contemporary Dance in the UK. It was in the dance environment that he first encountered the Pilates method, which quickly became an integral part of his training and subsequent professional career.
In 1982, he opened Body Control Studios at Pineapple Dance Studios in Covent Garden, London. The studio became an important center for teaching Pilates within the dance and performing arts community.
Two years later, he moved to the United States, where he took on the role of Pilates studio manager at the Houston Ballet Company in Texas, a position he held until 1990.
During this time, he traveled across the United States, learning the Pilates method from renowned teachers, including Joseph Pilates’ first-generation students – Carola Trier and Romana Kryzanowska at the Pilates studio in New York. He also taught classes at numerous Pilates studios throughout the United States, including the Voight Centre in Los Angeles and Winsor Pilates.
Upon returning to Europe in the mid-1990s, he continued to expand his educational activities internationally.
In 1995, he founded the Pilates Institute UK, where he served as director until 2008 and played a significant role in the development of Pilates teacher education in the UK and globally. Currently, he leads the international training organization Michael King Pilates (MK Pilates), whose educational programs are implemented in over 30 countries. These programs combine the traditional Pilates repertoire with a modern understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, and effective teaching methodology.
Michael King is also the founder of the Society for the Pilates Method – an organization established to protect the integrity of the Pilates method and promote professional teaching standards.
He currently serves as Chairman of EMD UK, the British governing body for group exercise standards, supporting the professional development of instructors and trainers. For nearly five decades, Michael King has earned a reputation as a respected lecturer and educator in both the Pilates community and the fitness industry. He is known for his clear, methodical teaching style and strong emphasis on biomechanics, movement assessment, and professional responsibility. He continues to actively train teachers, conduct workshops, and present at international conventions, mentoring successive generations of instructors through structured educational pathways.
