Kyria Sabin is one of the most important contemporary teachers of the Pilates method and a direct successor to Ron Fletcher’s work. She serves as the Program Director for Fletcher Pilates, where she is responsible for developing educational programs and training future generations of teachers in this method.
She graduated from Duke University, and her education also includes massage therapy. She became involved with the Pilates method in the early 1990s, beginning her studies with Ron Fletcher in 1991 – one of Joseph and Clara Pilates’ most renowned students. Just two years later, in 1993, she founded her own studio, Body Works Pilates, in Tucson, Arizona, which became an important center for practice and education in the field.
Ron Fletcher recognized Kyria Sabin as a Master Teacher, entrusting her with the responsibility of transmitting and developing his approach to the method. Kyria also introduced Pilates instruction to the University of Arizona, where she developed programs based on this method, combining movement practice with academic education.
After Ron Fletcher’s passing (December 6, 2011), Kyria Sabin was recognized as his successor and guardian of the Fletcher Pilates legacy. She continues to develop this school of movement, ensuring the preservation of its original principles and philosophy.
In her work, she emphasizes that Pilates is a holistic form of body and movement work that is not limited to performing exercises. According to her, this method teaches a better way of moving through life, developing body awareness, concentration, and physical and mental balance. Kyria Sabin also stresses the importance of faithfully transmitting the foundations of the method, believing that teaching Pilates requires time, deep practice, and understanding. She advises those wishing to become teachers to first practice as students for a long time, then learn the method through a full training program, and later develop their skills through practice and studio work.
